3 Steps to Decluttering & Organizing Your Home for Fall
1. Declutter Warm-Weather Items
Now is a great time to go through all of your family’s summer activity items—such as pool toys, camping gear, golf equipment, etc.—and declutter. Once you’ve decluttered, put the items you are keeping for next season in labeled bins and store them in your garage, attic, or a dedicated closet. This will free up space for fall and winter essentials while keeping your home streamlined and clutter-free.
2. Rotate Your Wardrobe & Store Off-Season Clothing
Sweater weather is upon us, so now is the time to rotate your wardrobes. As you pack away your summer items, consider each item and determine if it will be worn next season or if it should be donated or sold. Hang all the off-season dresses, blazers, blouses, and pants you are keeping in garment bags to help them dust- and wrinkle-free during the off-season. For t-shirts, light-weight sweaters, shorts, coverups, etc., to be worn next season, file fold them to maximize space and place them in covered bins which can be stacked and stored away until next season.
3. Create a Drop Zone
Fall can be a busy time of year, thus your entryway/mudroom can become a high-traffic area. Creating an easy-to-use drop zone for shoes, coats, and bags can help keep your family on schedule and prevent clutter from piling up by the door. To start, designate at least one wall-mounted hook per person to keep jackets and hats organized and at the ready. Then, place a boot tray, shoe rack, or baskets under the hooks to corral the piles of boots, sneakers, and dress shoes. Lastly, hang a shelf about 36” above the floor or place a small table near the door to capture everyday essentials like keys and sunglasses.
Set your future-self up for success by decluttering summer items, cleaning and neatly storing your summer wardrobe in protective bags and/or bins, and creating an all-season drop zone will help you enjoy the season.
